This monograph, originally written in Bengali, is from the pen of the famous archaeologist Rakhal Das Bannerjee, who was the first to make a study of the remains of the hitherto unexplored ruins of the Indus Civilisation. This book traces the origin and development of the Bengali script chromatically : starting with the Northern Indian Alphabets (BC 350 to AD 600), the narrative discusses the Older Maurya alphabet and its varieties; the Younger Maurya alphabet; Kushana inscriptions; the Gupta alphabet of the 4th and 5th centuries AD; the Eastern Alphabet (AD 550 to AD 1100). The book ends with a dissertation on the final development of the alphabet. This work is a reprint of the 1919 edition.
